Contact with someone with Hepatitis B
Did you have sex with someone who has Hepatitis B? Or do you share a home with someone who is infected? Then we might be able to vaccinate you to protect you.
To see if vaccination makes sense, the Public Health Service will first draw some blood to see if you are infected. If another doctor already ordered a blood test for you, we would like to see those results.
The blood test can show three results:
- You were infected with Hepatitis B in the past and your body got rid of the virus on its own. This means you are protected for the rest of your life. You do not need another vaccination.
- You were infected with Hepatitis B virus in the past and the virus is still present in your body. This means you are a carrier of the virus. Vaccination would be pointless. We will advise you on how to avoid passing the disease on to others. And we recommend that you get in touch with your GP for a referral to a specialist.
- You have never had the Hepatitis B virus. We can vaccinate you. A full Hepatitis B vaccination consists of 3 jabs. Once you have had the third, you will be protected against this disease for life.
Blood test at the Public Health Service
The results of your blood test at the Public Health Service will be available within ten days. We will send you your results by post. We will also send your results to your GP. Are you the partner of someone with Hepatitis B? Then we will draw some blood from you within six weeks after the third vaccination. If it turns out that you are not yet protected for the full 100%, you will receive a second round of vaccinations.
Costs of vaccination
You need three vaccinations to be fully immunised against Hepatitis B. One vaccine costs €32.18. You will be reimbursed by your health insurer. The costs of your vaccine will be deducted from your excess. The vaccination is free for children under the age of 18.
